LA County Board of Education and Supt. Of Schools Adopt Resolution Supporting Ethnic Studies Curriculums for County Schools

LACOE ratifies importance of programs that embrace diversity

Downey, CA (February 10) – At this week’s regularly scheduled board meeting, the Los Angeles County Board of Education and the County Superintendent of Schools adopted a resolution that declared their commitment to advocate for, support and defend the implementation of ethnic studies courses in LA County schools as a graduation requirement by 2025-26.

Resolution No. 29: Supporting Ethnic Studies Implementation further calls for LACOE to implement an ethnic studies pilot program for its own schools commencing in 2022-23. Finally, the resolution calls on education communities to provide local schools and districts with appropriate resources, support, and opportunities to achieve the key principles and outcomes of ethnic studies teaching and learning, such as diversity, inclusion, challenging systems of inequality, and support for student agency and civic engagement.
